Meet Ariel

Young girl smiling and making a peace sign, wearing a pink jacket and headphones, in a castle-like setting with a long dining table set with plates and goblets.

Hey there, I’m Ariel. I’m a girl from RGPS and I’m in P6 this year.

When I was younger, I aspired to be a scientist as I always thought science was super cool. Although I no longer aspire to be a scientist, I still find science fascinating.

I also find math interesting. Sometimes, when I can’t solve a math question, there’s always a trick to solve it, which I find extremely satisfying. That’s why I participate in math olympiad competitions, not for the medals but for the thrill of math.

Growing up, I have learnt many skills and have many hobbies. My hobbies include crocheting, calligraphy, sewing, drawing and reading. When I was two and a half, I started learning the piano. Bit by bit, I slowly grew to accomplish great feats. One of them was performing at RGPS Got Talent, something I will never forget.

I also picked up crocheting and calligraphy when I was in P4.

Now, if you are wondering what math, science, piano, crocheting and calligraphy have in common, it’s one thing: curiosity and perseverance. For example, when I don’t understand a science concept, I would definitely ask others for help. If I feel like crocheting is something fun to try, I set a goal and learn crochet despite the difficulties.

I think that at times, I am a little bit like Hyacinth Vanderbeeker, my favourite character from my favourite book The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser. I remember that in chapter seven of the book, Hyacinth felt that she needed to fix a mistake she had caused. She made a placemat and redid it until her hand was aching. Then she told herself she needed to be “Hyacinth the Brave” before knocking on the door of the person she was giving the placemat to, despite dropping the placemat at his feet and going back to her apartment. I admire her courage and determination.

All in all, I believe curiosity and determination are the most important things a person can have. With these values, they allow me to want to know more about everything while persevering to do anything I want to do till the end despite the challenges.

I cannot wait to see what the future holds.
